Fighting Fat, Part 2 Of Our Mini Series On Fat

By Andrew Gee The following article is one of a series of articles which focus on Self Improvement, Motivation and Empowerment. It is based on research done over twenty years as a personal and business coach. This self improvement article was written in response to questions which have been asked on losing weight and long term weight loss as well as address common challenges that people have with this subject. I sincerely hope that you find the following information of value. Fighting Fat, Part 2 Of Our Mini Series On Fat Dealing with being overweight or obese and the consequences of these conditions are seriously problematic for many of us. Many people are overweight because of their own lifestyle choices. Others have ended up with a lot of extra weight through no fault of their own. These people have to face the prejudices of others on a daily basis. Living in a world that doesn’t always take kindly to them whether it is public transport, fashions, shopping, being on vacation or whatever is not funny. This is the sad and shameful reality that some of us have to face and it can be seriously damaging to our well being. Self-image and self-esteem depend largely on how other people see us, think about us (or what we think they think about us), talk about us and it takes a huge ego or an awful lot of willpower not to care about the views and opinions of others. And the bigger you are the harder it gets. People staring wherever you go and having to listen to all sorts of bad jokes and insults is a surefire way of lowering your self-esteem and triggering a self-destructing pattern. Obese people prefer to stay in-doors and avoid moving about much, which leads to even more weight gained from lack of exercise, which leads to less exercise and so on. People whose self-esteem is low find it very hard to motivate themselves to improve their lives. ========SIDEBAR======== When it comes to the subject of self improvement, I fully understand (through my own experiences) that it is a lot easier said than done. However, you are here, right now, because you have a desire to improve your self or you are at least interested in this subject. Perhaps you are reading this to help a friend or colleague – great. If this article helps you or you help a friend, paying it forward is what lif’e all about so we all win. ======END SIDEBAR====== Therein lies the key. We may acknowledge the advice and good intentions of others but, ultimately, we and only we can really motivate ourselves to want to make a difference. Achieving this, however, is no mean feat and if you have motivated yourself you should be deservedly proud of yourself. Relationships are hard to handle for overweight people. Sex becomes awkward, especially for a self-conscious person who doesn’t enjoy being naked. The extra weight makes sustained effort quite hard to perform and heavy sweating is not sexy. Unfortunately, the shape of an overweight person is not sexy either and most overweight people are hard pressed to find sex partners who don’t mind their shortcomings. The fact that overweight people don’t go out much makes finding partners even harder, which is why many simply give up and reach out for more food and sweets to stave off depression. One of the best ways to deal with obesity is to help motivate yourself as mentioned. Outside support is crucial because obese people are especially prone to taking the easy way and eating more than they should. A little flexibility also counts. Food addiction is next door to drug addiction and less food means less glucose triggering endorphins in the brain. This, in turn, means that a person who used to feel quite content is suddenly faced not only with depression, but also with the perspective of a long term, even lifelong depression. That has to be devastating for anybody. Getting fat is easy, shedding all that extra weight is not. Fighting fat is a struggle every step of the way and one needs to be strong and also to have the emotional support of a loving circle of relatives and friends. Being able to rely on others to help you through the worst parts of a diet is almost half the battle. Especially since after the diet comes a lifetime of less food and more exercise. This may sound a bit scary to the average overweight person, but you must remember that looking into the mirror or walking down the street won’t be a nightmare anymore. It will be an absolute joy. Finding sensible, safe and long term methods of weight loss and weight maintenance takes a lot of research which we have done and continue to do so that we can provide these informative and motivational articles to help you move forward and realize your personal goals and aspirations. NOW is the time! O.K. you have read the article. Now is the time for action. Without action, this article adds no value whatsoever to your self improvement. But remember, without action, you cannot blame this self improvement article or any article for that matter. So, take action NOW. The Latest Treatments For Alzheimer’s Disease

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=William_Riopelle,_MS] William Riopelle, MS Since Alzheimer’s disease is commonly a slow process, the disease affects people differently and therefore individuals respond to different treatments uniquely. Currently, there is no drug or treatment program that stops the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. However, for individuals who are in mild, and middle stages of the disease, certain drugs have proven successful. The latest drugs for treating Alzheimer’s disease Aricept (donepezil) Given orally, this medication is a reversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It is used to treat symptoms in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Our brains normally produce acetylcholine, a chemical thought to be important for learning and memory. People with Alzheimer’s disease have lower brain levels of acetylcholine. Aricept acts by decreasing the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme whose function is to break down acetylcholine. It is believed that by reducing the breakdown of acetylcholine, it will lead to an increase in the level of acetylcholine in the brain. Cognex (tacrine) Given orally, this is another medication that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. Tacrine will not cure Alzheimer’s disease, and it will not stop the disease from getting worse. However, tacrine can improve thinking ability in some patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Exelon (rivastigmine) Another cholinesterase inhibitor given orally. This medication is used to treat loss of memory and thinking ability associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. Razadyne (galantamine) This medication was formerly known as Reminyl. It was changed to razadyne on July 1st 2005. Razadyne is a competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It has been shown to treat some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease successfully. Namenda (memantine) Approved by the FDA in October, 2003, this medication is given orally, and works different from the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It it thought that too much glutamate in the brain can cause cellular damage. Namenda works by blocking the effects of glutamate. Antioxidants Clinical trials have shown that vitamin E slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by about seven months. Current clinical trials are underway to determine whether vitamin E will slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Other clinical trials are underway to determine whether vitamin E and selenium supplements can help slow or prevent symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo Biloba The latest studies using Ginkgo Biloba extract from leaves has shown this chemical to be of some help with treating Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. However, there is no evidence that Ginkgo Biloba but will cure or prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, there is some clinical evidence showing that Ginkgo Biloba can delay cognitive deficits or prevent dementia to a certain extent in older people. Estrogen Clinical trials have been conducted showing that estrogen therapy can protect the brain against damages caused by Alzheimer’s disease. These studies were originally conducted using estrogen on women for hormone replacement therapy. Positive response regarding Alzheimer’s disease prevention, was noted as a side effect. Current evidence has shown while estrogen therapy can help prevent the severity or symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, it will not slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease once it has already been diagnosed. Also, one study showed that women over the age of 65 who were receiving estrogen and progestin therapy, were at greater risk of dementia and greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. Individuals may participate in current scientific clinical trials People with Alzheimer’s disease may participate in scientific clinical trials. In order to qualify to participate in the studies, certain tests must be conducted. For more information about participating in current clinical studies for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, one can find out more information by calling 1-800-438-4380, which is the Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment Center. How To Use Pictures Of Hair Styles To Find Your New Look

By Michael Barrows Most people choose their new hair style by looking at a picture of a hair style or browsing hair style photos. This can be a great way to find the perfect look, but there are some guidelines that you should keep in mind when looking at pictures of hair styles. Doing so can help you avoid hair disasters and guarantee that you come out looking like your chosen hairstyle picture. You can find pictures of hair styles in style books and portfolios found at most salons, in fashion magazines, and in online hair style photo galleries. All of these ways can give you numerous ideas and a picture of hair style that you can carry with you to discuss your new style with your beautician. By seeing a picture of hair style, both you and your stylist can have a realistic expectation of what your new style will look like and how to achieve it. Have you ever found the perfect hairstyle picture only to come out of the salon looking nothing like the woman in the picture? Most blame it on their stylist. While part of the blame can be put on the stylist for not pointing out your picture of hair style blunder, most often the blame lies with choosing the wrong hairstyle picture to compliment your face shape and hair texture. A picture of hair style is a representation of what the woman in the hair style photo looks like with a particular style. You can not realistically expect to look like the picture of a hair style because you are not that woman; your hair and structure are different. But you can selectively choose your pictures of hair styles and eliminate the ones that would be disastrous for you by following a few pointers. 1. When browsing through pictures of hair styles, be sure to pay extra attention to the type and texture of hair that the lady in the hairstyle picture has. Is her hair coarse, thin, wavy, or straight? Try to find pictures of hair styles with hair types that closely resemble your own. Keep in mind that a picture of a hair style may look great with a particular model because she has thick and naturally curly hair, but the same hair style may not look so great on someone with thin, limp hair. 2. Often, pictures of hair styles are taken of models with perfect bone structures. It is very rare that you find a picture of hair style with a model trying to conceal a too-high hair line, prominent nose or under-developed chin. If you have features that you wish to highlight or diminish, pay special attention to the style in the picture of hair style. Would the style in the picture of hair style compliment your features or take away from them? 3. Use an interactive online photo gallery. You can upload your photo and use it to test how you might look with lots of different hair style photos. This is a great way to “try before you buy” to avoid expensive mistakes when you go to the salon. Once you find a few hair style photos that you think are perfect for you, ask your stylist for her opinion on your chosen pictures of hair styles. He or she will be able to tell you without a doubt whether or not your selected hair style will be picture perfect for you. Michael Barrows’ website gives great advice for good hair. Clean Those Gutters

By Todd Wessel Clean those gutters There are two times in the year when you need to check your roof gutters for debris in the mid-Atlantic. This would be October thru December and April thru May. In the fall (October thru December), we have leaf drop from the trees, temperature changes increasing the winds and usually an abundance of rainfall. Combine these three and this should raise a red flag for your gutters. In the spring (April thru May) you have trees pollinating, producing flowers and seeds. Add the winds and rain and again you get the same potential for clogged gutters. Leaves or debris drop and are blown around by the wind, filling your gutters and blocking the downspouts. The rain begins and the water has no where to go. The amount of water that comes off of a roof in a storm is incredible. The flow is fast moving, quickly overflowing the gutter and saturating everything below. Roofing materials and gutters are damaged; water runs down exterior walls, finding its way inside, causing future unseen problems. Building siding turns green from always being wet and looks unsightly. Gutters that overflow streak black from roofing material debris. Water, spilling out of gutters, falls with such a force that it erodes the mulch and soil below, causing washouts in the landscape beds. Splashing soil and mulch also stain the sides of the buildings below, identifying gutter problems above. The force of the falling water washes all the soil away below exposing the rocks buried within the soil. Freezing Issues In the winter, when the temperatures go below freezing, any water left in the gutters will become a heavy block of ice. This block of ice not only inhibits the flow of water but puts a lot of downward pressure on the gutter, sometimes pulling the gutter away from the roof. When this happens, any water coming off of the roof in a storm will go between the roof and the gutter causing a major waterfall. Check your gutters, this is very important. Cleaning those gutters When cleaning your gutters, be very careful of height, ladder stability and overhead and house power lines. Remember, when your ladder is secure, you feel better and the whole process is easier. Wear rubber gloves if you have them, this will keep the wet debris from staining your hands and fingernails. The space inside the gutter is very tight and as you grab the debris, you cant help but get dirt under your nails. You also dont know whats been growing in that muck for the last month. Wear the gloves. Another reason to wear gloves is the sheet metal, which the gutters are made of, is very sharp. Wearing gloves will prevent you from slicing your hand open while cleaning the debris. Carry a bag or bucket up the ladder to put the debris in. This makes it easier on the ladder. Empty every time or every other time you come down. Do not extend yourself way out when up on the ladder. Reaching out too far from one side or the other may cause the ladder to shift making it unstable. Also make sure there is at least one rung above the roof line just in case the ladder shifted, it would stay on the roof longer. I sometimes use a piece of rebar, long stake or anything I can drive into the ground behind your ladder. This item will stick up enough out of the ground to hit the last rung and keep the ladder from sliding backwards while I am in the air. This is a good added safety measure. If you have to go very high for your gutters, do not do this alone. Get some help and be safe. Tracking Your Way to the Top!

By Debbie LaChusa I often wonder how people without a plan know where they’re going. Or, how they know when they’ve arrived at their destination. Think about it. If you never specify what your goal is, how do you go about achieving it? And how do you know when to celebrate? Step One Having a clearly defined, and written goal is the first step in creating a successful business. How Will You Measure Your Success? Whether you choose to measure your success in number of clients or revenue per month or year, or in any other terms, is up to you. The point is to establish a measurable goal. Step Two The second step to creating a successful business is creating a plan to achieve your goal. This is your marketing plan and it ensures all your time, energy and money are focused on achieving whatever it is YOU want to achieve. But it doesn’t stop there. A Goal And A Plan Are NOT Enough Just having a goal and a plan are not enough. You must track your progress so you can determine if it will require more or different effort to achieve your goal. So how do you track your progress? You Need Two More Things … One First, you track your progress toward your overall goal. I recommend you evaluate this at least every couple of months. But why not just make a habit of doing it once a month? Make it a practice to review your marketing plan and how well it is moving you toward your goal, at the end of every month. A good day to do this is the day you take care of your end-of-month administrative tasks (things like paying bills and running sales and financial reports). If you break your goal down into twelfths, you can easily tell each month if you’re on track. And, if you’re not, you can easily make adjustments, like increasing your level of marketing if necessary, to get back on track. By keeping close tabs on your progress toward your goals, you greatly increase your odds of achieving them. Partly because you give yourself time to make adjustments and take a different route if necessary. And, partly because you are constantly reminding yourself of your intentions. And … Two The second way to stay on track is to track each of your individual marketing activities. This is how you’ll know if each activity is moving you toward your goal. For Example … Tracking Your Web Site Stats If you’re generating your prospects or clients via your web site, do you know how many visitors you need to generate the number of clients you’re shooting for? It’s pretty easy to determine if you utilize web site tracking reports. Your web host should provide tracking reports to let you know how many visitors your site is getting, and ideally you can track this for each page of your site. WebStat is a great tool that provides detailed reports on web site traffic. I use it as a supplement to the reports provided by my web host, and I love it. You can try it out at no cost, plus there’s a free version, or you can subscribe for a very low monthly fee. Learn more about WebStat here. If you have a newsletter or special report that web site visitors can subscribe to you can then determine what your conversion rate is: Total Subscribers divided by Total Visitors equals your Conversion Rate. Do You Know What Your Conversion Rates Are? You can then take this one step further by determining what your conversion rate is, from subscribers to clients. Or, to measure what your sales conversion rate is if you are selling products or services on your web site. Once you know your sales conversion rate, you should be able to calculate how many web site visitors you need to generate to achieve your sales or “number of clients” goal. This will tell you pretty quickly if you’re on track to achieve your goal, or if you need to generate a lot more web site traffic to do so. A Little Bit Of Math Upfront Will Guarantee Your Success While at first it may be disheartening, especially if you’re way off the mark, at least you have a clear picture of what it will take to reach your goal. Then it’s simply a matter of finding ways to generate the traffic. And then it’s only a matter of time until you achieve your goal. Track Your Speaking Engagements or Teleseminars You can track other marketing activities in a similar way. For example, with speaking engagements or teleseminars, what percentage of your attendees typically subscribe, and then what percentage of those typically become clients or buy? You can determine how big of an audience or how many speaking engagements or teleseminars you need to do to reach your goals. Track Your Public Relations Efforts For public relations, how many people do you need to reach, or impressions do you need to achieve to generate the return necessary to meet your goals? You can then send your releases out more frequently (just make sure they’re newsworthy) or to media with a larger audience. Again, if you monitor your results every month, you’ll have a very good idea if you’re on track to meet your goals. And, you’ll have plenty of time to make adjustments to your plan if necessary. So, What’s Your Goal For This Year? And do you know if you’re on track to achieve it? If you haven’t committed your goal to writing, I encourage you to do so today. If you’re not sure what you can achieve, then take your best guess and work towards that. You Can Track Your Way To The Top! Put some tracking practices into place and stay on top of them every month. If you do this, I guarantee you’ll achieve a lot more than if you just “wing it!” If you’d like some help creating your goals and developing a marketing plan to help you achieve them, check out The 10stepmarketing System. It walks you through the process in a simple, step-by-step manner, making it easy. 5 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight This Year

By Angela Sullivan With so many diet trends and weight loss programs on the market these days, it can be really confusing to know what works and what doesnt work, whats safe and whats not. Many people fall into the trap of believing that there is a quick-fix for weight loss. This new year, make a resolution to obtain permanent weight loss through healthy methods. No more quick-fix diet fads and unhealthy programs! While there are many products available with claims of being an easy method, there are only a few ways to guarantee weight loss. Burning more calories than you consume (by exercising), consuming fewer calories than your burn (by dieting), and boosting your metabolism (getting your body to burn more calories while at rest and during exercise). A person who is very active and is used to moving and using their body all day long is sure to burn more calories than someone who is sitting at a desk all day. Even while the person who is active all day is resting, their body is still burning more calories! Here are some great ways to increase your metabolism and get your body burning calories all day long! 1. Get Active – Try to incorporate more activity into your daily life. Whether walking to lunch, taking the stairs, or parking further away in a parking lot, try to get as much movement in as possible. 2. Eat throughout the day This will prevent your body from having energy highs and lows. It also gives your metabolism a steady stream of fuel so that it doesnt have to store up energy (fat) for later. 3. Lift Weights Bodies that contain more muscle use more fuel than bodies that contain more fat. Muscle is living, moving human parts that need fuel to operate. Fat stores are just that stored fat, that is just sitting there waiting to be used. Converting your fat to muscle is a great way to boost your metabolism. 4. Drink Water Help keep your body processes moving at full speed! Drinking water also keeps your organs functioning and moving, which also burns more calories. 5. Dont do Fad Diets They will only wreck your metabolism. Your body becomes confused when you starve it and then pig out. Yo-yo dieting causes your body to question when you will eat again, and begin to hold on to as much stored energy (fat) as possible. The new year is a great time to make resolutions to change your way of life to a more healthy one. Aim for permanent weight loss and increases in metabolism. This will help you to keep the weight off longer and enjoy the process much more. Why Should You Consider Designing Your Wedding Rings?

By Danah Yousuf Congratulations! If you are reading this article then chances are you have come to a stage in your relationship that you and your significant other are considering shopping for wedding rings or bands. I have not known one single person who has spent less then weeks thinking, deciding and choosing their wedding rings. It can be an exhilarating, exciting and and the same time frustrating experience. Its common to either not find what you are looking for or are just too expensive. Simple answer to this predicament is to design your wedding rings. And here is what you can expect to gain if you decide to do your own designing: – Affordability: This is the best and most important factor. You can significantly reduce the cost of the rings. One reason ready-made rings are so expensive is because of the designing expenses. So if you create your own, you dont have to bear the burden of an expensive designer label bill. – Uniqueness: There are not many better ways to symbolize your love then having your own unique wedding rings, and trust me, people will compliment on your rings wherever you go. – Personalized: By designing your own, you can ensure that it suits your tastes and you can include secret messages or symbols to each other. – Opportunity to exhibit your creativity: And last but not least – one more reason why people prefer designing their wedding rings to buying ready-made ones is the chance to bring into play originality and creativity in embodying mutual love. Danah Yousuf is a freelance writer and a full-time mom. Her work and poems have been published in periodicals overseas and writes extensively for women and children. Caring For Your Juniper Bonsai

By Lee Dobbins The classic Juniper bonsai is a natural hybrid species of Chinese Juniper. Since some Junipers can live for 200 years, caring for your Juniper Bonsai can give you a beautiful plant that will last a lifetime (and then some!) The Juniper is an evergreen coniferous shrub which can be found in mountains and forests everywhere in the world. Their needle like leaves turn scaly as the tree matures and have a blueish green to light green shading with an occasional silvery variation. There are over 50 species of Juniper, many of which are long lived, but some only live for 2 or 3 years after being turned into Bonsai plants. Your Juniper Bonsai is relatively easy to care for as it is pretty much disease free. It thrives in full sun bu must be protected from the hot midday sun. In cold climates you must also protect your bonsai from frost. If you plan to grow your Juniper Bonsai indoors, make sure you have the appropriate lighting. These plants also need a bit of a humid environment so misting can help. Be careful when watering and be sure that you water until soil is most, but dont leave standing water in the pot as root rot can kill these trees easily. Like most plants, Junipers benefit from fertilization and they should be given a high nitrogen fertilizer every two weeks starting in spring and running through mid summer. From midsummer on, give them a low nitrogen fertilizer alternating with an acidic fertilizer. Bonsai plants in pots need to be repotted every two years until they are about 10 years old. Its best to report in the spring, using a slightly larger pot. Be sure to use free draining soil that includes clean grit or stone so alkaline deposits are kept from harming the Juniper. Shaping your Juniper Bonsai is what makes the tree unique and can be accomplished with careful pinching throughout the growing season. Be sure to use only your fingers to pinch and never use scissors or other tools which will cause the ends to turn brown. Make sure you dont pinch off all the greens as you will need enough foliage to protect the branches. Avoid pinching the first leaves that sprout and make sure that you develop a gradual pinching routine leaving a reasonable amount of time between pichings. With proper care, you will be able to enjoy your Juniper Bonsai for a long time. One interesting fact is that Junipers keep their shape for many weeks even after they die. Lee Dobbins writes for Bonsais At Garden Corner where you can learn more about caring for your Bonsai. Satellite Communication – The Transponder System Part V

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Dulaney]John Dulaney Commercial companies like Hughes, Aerospatiale, and Lockheed Martin have been designing satellites to continually keep up with the growing demand for satellite phones, TVs and data services. These companies have achieved this at the expense of greater spacecraft size and power. This expense is particularly true for geostationary orbiting satellites, which requires larger transmission power and high gain dish antenna diameters, to overcome the tremendous signal loss, during its path through the 35,000 km from Earth to the satellite and vice-versa. To begin with, satellites designs are at first cocenptualised, which provides a clear planning regarding, the purpose of the satellite and to examine the systems necessary to complete its mission. What follows next is the preliminary design and basic design stages. During the preliminary stage, a model is constructed for experimentation to test if the new technologies incorporated in the satellite can be realised during this basic design stage. An engineering model is made after this, and intense testing of all the parameters is made in-order to establish the design viability. There are quite a few shapes that satellites are constructed. There are the Spherical ones, cylindrical shapes, box shapes, and the multi-mission module system, where the two parts, the bus and the mission equipment, are divided into upper and lower sections. The bus system carries many sub-systems, such as, the telemetry tracking and command system, the electrical power system, attitude control system, propulsion system, structural system and thermal control system. The shapes of any satellite are decided on the basis of the size and the weight carried by the satellite. In discussing the working of a satellite, relating to send/receive of information from the Earth station to the satellite and vice-versa, we had, in the previous artcles, looked at the basic principle of the antenna system deployed in such applications. There is another section in a satellite, which provides the same functional part of this send/receive process. This component is called a transponder. The Transponder The term Transponder, which is the short form of Transmitter-responder and sometimes abbreviated to XPDR, XPNDR or TPDR, is found in telecommunication applications. This is a device that receives signals from the Earth station, amplifies it and sends them for processing. The processed data is re-transmitted by the transponder back to the Earth station, in a different frequency other than that of the received one. As discussed in the past articles, a separation in frequencies between the received and the transmitted signals are maintained in-order to provide enough margins for a possible interference. A Transponder is also used for transmitting reply messages in response of an electronic interrogation. Transponders are the individual communication channels of a satellite, each being a transreceiver or a repeater. With digital signaling, several video and audio channels may be multiplexed and compressed and made to travel through a single transponder on a single wide band carrier. We have discussed the matter about frequency bands in one of the earlier articles. We have also explained what is meant by frequency, which is measured in Hertz (Hz). The communication signals are radio waves carried by what is termed as a ‘carrier frequency’. In order to examine what a carrier frequency is – the method of how a carrier frequency is technically utilised in communication needs to be briefly discussed. Basically, there are four types of techniques by which signals are transmitted and these are – amplitude modulated (AM) signals, frequency modulated (FM) signals, or phase modulated (PM) signals. This is briefly discussed below. Let us suppose that the signal, as illustrated in Figure (1), needs to me transmitted using Amplitude Modulation (AM) technique. In this case a carrier signal is generated. A carrier frequency is a constant frequency which carries the generated signal. The process is shown in Figure (1). Here, the signal generated is modulating the amplitude of the carrier signal and this is the signal which is transmitted. In case of Frequency Modulation (FM), the carrier frequency is modulated by the frequency of the signal being transmitted., unlike AM. You will notice a variation in the frequency of the carrier signal in proportion to the frequency of the signal to be transmitted. Figure (2) illustrates the example. As for Phase Modulation, the information signal is transmitted by the instantaneous variation of the phase of the carrier signal by the signal to be transmitted. This principle is not very much used, unlike its most popular counterpart, frequency modulation (FM). This is because of the reason, that it tends to require more complex receiving hardware and there can be ambiguity problems with determining whether, for example, the signal has 0 phase or 180 phase. Figure (3) illustrates an example. Transponders are transmitters and responders of satellites. The job of a transponder is to receive the signal from the earth station, which gets modulated, amplified and re-transmitted as an up-linked signal. The Transponder is a part of the payload of a telecommunication satellite and there could be 20 to 30 of them in such a satellite. The carrier signals, discussed above, are received by the transponders at very low power, owing to the distance that it needs to travel from the respective Earth stations to the satellite, placed about 35,000 miles above Earth. These signals need to be amplified to a good extent and then re-transmitted to the designated Earth stations. It has a set of high power amplifiers, where each of these amplifiers works on different frequencies. The combination of the devices, which transmit and receive, along-with the amplifier system, is known as the Transponder. This equipment includes the high power amplifier and electronic filters at the input and output of the amplifiers.. These filter devices filter the carrier frequencies from the ones reaching the transponder and isolates those meant for processing by the other transponders. It is the central element in a satellite which maintains end-to-end link between the Earth stations and the satellite. In such communication scenario, the up-link from the Earth stations to the satellite has its contribution in distorted signals reaching the satellite as will the down-link have, while transmitting signals from the satellite to the Earth stations. Some of these distortions are not co-related. In order to correct these distortions, the individual contributions must be known. The process of up-link and down-link signal conditioning is quite complex and is briefly discussed here. In order to understand this simplified presentation, there are certain terms which need to be explained. Modulator – Figures (1), (2) and (3) represents the various techniques used in signal transmission. The figures represent a carrier signal, the communication signal and lastly the modulated carrier signal. The carrier signal is modulated by the communication signal or the signal which needs to be transmitted. This is done by an electronics system called ‘Modulator’. In the context of this discussion, it is enough to understand that the communication signal modulates the carrier signal and then this composite signal is processed for transmission. De-modulator – As the composite modulated signal gets transmitted, it is received in the same fashion as it was transmitted. We ignore here any distortion or electrical noise that has got associated with the signal on its path either to the satellite or the Earth station. Now, as it reaches the receiver, the embedded communication signal needs to be recovered from the composite or modulated carrier signal received. The process of singling out this real communication signal from the one received is done through a De-modulator, which is just opposite to what the modulator does. Multiplexers – The cost of implementing several channels of each data source is not only very high but also an inconvenience. The solution to this is a Multiplexer, which combines several incoming signals and produced one output, synchronised in such a manner that a particular input signal is available at the output at a given synchronised moment. This would mean that a multiplexer merges the incoming channels into one channel. Multiplexers can be of two types – analog and digital. De-multiplexer – At the output end of the multiplexer, where a single channel comprises of the several incoming signals, a De-multiplexer, splits the single data stream into the original multiple signals, performing an exact opposite task of a multiplexer. A simple diagram of a multiplexer is illustrated in Figure (4). Data Compression – Data Compression is the process of encoding electronic information using fewer binary digits or other information bearing units. The volume of data in that information is greatly reduced compared to the un-coded representation. Usually, as in the case of any communication technology, data compression only works when the receiving station understands this encoding and accordingly is able to decode the incoming signal. Let us now consider a scenario, where a certain Earth station is transmitting information to the satellite. Accordingly, the satellite re-transmits the signal to another earth station where the signal, where it is designated. The signal being transmitted goes through a whole lot of process to reach the satellite and a similar process is followed to transmit the signal to the designated Earth station by the satellite. A simple diagram is presented in Figure (5). LNA – LNA stands for Low Noise amplifier. This is a special type of amplifier having application in communication systems. It is located quite close to the antenna. Using a LNA, the noise is substantially reduced by the gain of the amplifier, while the electrical noise from the amplifier itself is injected into the signal being processed. Very simply put, the ‘gain’ of an amplifier is its ability to increase the magnitude of an input signal. Figure (5) Satellite Transponder Communication Technique In order to understand the working of the transmitter and receiver application, reference is made to the above, where the typical terms have been briefly explained. The digital input signal goes through Compression of digital data which is Multiplexed and then Modulated. The modulated signal goes through the Up-converter and a Filter and the pure digital information signal is then consequently amplified by a high power amplifier HPA and transmitted to the satellite. The signal needs to be adequately amplified in order to travel about 35,000 miles above the Earth and reach the transponders of the satellite system. The signal reaching the satellite has by then become weak and is amplified through a low noise amplifier (LNA) down-converted through a Down-converter. The signal goes through filtration of unwanted electrical noises and passes through a Limiter. A limiter is some kind of a circuit that defines the level of the signal that is desirable. A limiter is a circuit that allows signals below a set value to pass unaffected. The signal coming out of the limiter is then amplified by A again as a preparation to transmit it back to the designated Earth station, It is again filtered removing any electrical noise that the signal would have inherited through processing. This is then presented to the transponder dish to be re-transmitted back to the designated Earth Station. In receiving the signal, it goes through a so called opposite processing. The signal reaching the station is weak and is passed through a low noise amplifier (LNA) and down-converted, demodulated and then decompressed. The output being the pure re-transmitted digital signal is then received by the ground station. A transponder is therefore is a broadband radio frequency channel and has application in amplifying one or more carrier signals and can deliver data rates in the range of 50 to 150 Mbps. Careful consideration to the design aspects of these transponders are required in achieving these high data rates Satellite phone use overseas. Renting and buying satellite phones. We do both.
